Towns of Kurukshetra

Each town in Kurukshetra district reflects a unique aspect of Haryana’s identity—be it through spirituality, agriculture, trade, or education. These towns not only serve as the pillars of local development but also embody the essence of Kurukshetra’s glorious past and progressive present. Visitors are encouraged to explore these towns to experience their distinct flavors and contributions to the region.

District has Five Towns.

Thanesar

Thanesar, often regarded as the heart of Kurukshetra, is the most prominent town both historically and spiritually. It is closely associated with the Mahabharata era and is believed to be the site where Lord Krishna delivered the sacred message of the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. Major landmarks include the Brahma Sarovar, Sannihit Sarovar, Jyotisar, and Krishna Museum. Thanesar also serves as the district’s administrative and cultural center, housing government offices, educational institutions, and religious places.

Shahbad

Located in the northern part of the district, Shahabad is a well-developed town known for its strategic location along National Highway 44. It is a major grain market, Shahabad Co-operative Sugar Mills, contributing heavily to Haryana’s agricultural trade. Shahabad is also known for the Markanda River and several historic temples. Educational institutions, rice mills, and transport facilities make it a vital commercial node in Kurukshetra.

Ismailabad

Ismailabad is a semi-urban town located close to the Punjab border. It serves as an important agricultural market and transit point for goods movement between the two states. The town is known for its wheat and rice farming, rural markets, and community-led cultural activities.

Pehowa

Pehowa is an ancient pilgrimage town on the banks of the Sarasvati River. Known for its religious importance, it is a major site for performing pind daan and shraddha rituals for ancestors. Temples such as the Sarasvati Tirtha and Panchananda Teerth attract devotees throughout the year. Pehowa is also a hub for agricultural trade and small-scale industries, contributing significantly to the local economy.

Ladwa

Ladwa is a significant sub-divisional town in Kurukshetra district, known for its strong agricultural base and active rural trade. The town features a large grain and vegetable market, serving farmers from surrounding villages and playing a central role in the region’s agrarian economy. Ladwa is also home to numerous rice mills and small-scale trading units.

Ladwa holds added prominence as it is a Haryana Legislative Assembly constituency currently represented by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Haryana, which has contributed to enhanced focus on infrastructure development and public services in the area.

The town is witnessing gradual transformation with improvements in road connectivity, market infrastructure, and basic civic amenities. While educational and healthcare institutions are developing, ongoing initiatives aim to strengthen these sectors further. Ladwa stands at the intersection of tradition and progress, making it a key node in Kurukshetra’s overall development landscape.

Prominent Villages

District has Two Prominent Villages

Babain

Babain, though smaller in size, plays a crucial role in the rural development of the district. It is surrounded by fertile agricultural land and contributes significantly to the district’s dairy and vegetable production. The town is witnessing growth in educational facilities and rural infrastructure, making it a developing center of local commerce.

 

Jhansa

Jhansa is a peaceful rural town located near the Markanda River. It is well known for its agricultural produce, traditional Haryanvi lifestyle, and active participation in community welfare. Local governance and village development initiatives are helping Jhansa grow sustainably, with improved roads, schools, and civic facilities.
